[INTERVIEW] Yerin Baek, how are you nowadays?
Yerin Baek is here after working hard at loving herself for a long while now. Following the last album with a total of 18 songs, another full-length album containing 14 songs was released for the world in a year. Yerin: I have a strong workaholic tendency. As of 2020, I felt that the excessive worries and extra enthusiasm I have more than needed were making it hard for me. That's why I have not worked on any songs except for the arrangement since summer. I don’t know when my next album will be released (laugh). The title of the last album <Every letter I sent you.> was about ‘Me’, while the title of this album <tellusboutyourself> is about ‘You’. What do you want to include in the album? Yerin: The ‘you’ in ‘Tell me about you’ actually refer to the many egos/personalities in me. This is why it is safe to say that the 14 tracks are Yerin Baek’s 14 personalities. I was happy that the last album was loved by so many people, but I always felt apologetic that I couldn’t show myself now because I released songs that I wrote so long ago. However, this album is full of stories about me in the present (now). It’s an album that was created with only me in mind.

Yerin Baek’s Romantic Moments
Yerin Baek, who visited NOW. ‘#outnow’ exactly a year ago, has graced us once again on NOW. with her 2nd full album ‘tellusboutyourself’. The 14 tracks in the album are once again prepared to soothe our ears through the fierce winter wind just like last winter. This day was made unforgettable where the differences between the 1st and 2nd album were compared, as well as commentary on all the tracks, and the live performances for the title track and side tracks. - Article by Jo Hyunwook, Photo by Lee Seunghoon Yerin Baek’s visit on ‘#outnow’ after a year [INTERVIEW] "Let's be happy together": Yerin Baek talks about her new album 'tellusboutyourself'
Yerin Baek's new album <tellusboutyourself> has just arrived by our sides. The album with a total of 14 tracks including 2 title tracks '0415' and 'Hate you', showcases the variety of genres and a new world of Yerin Baek that was not seen previously. It has been a year since her first full-length album <Every letter I sent you.> came into the world and until today, how did she spend her time and with what thoughts? What kind of stories did she want to tell us? <HYPEBEAST> is here to briefly listen to Yerin Baek's inner thoughts. It's your new album in exactly a year. How have you been throughout this year of many changes? Yerin: I was a little upset because my performances and events etc. got cancelled because of COVID-19. Nevertheless, I am thankful that as a result I could spend some time refining and looking back at myself. Your albums seem to be often released in winter. Is this because you like winter? Yerin: Maybe because I was born in early summer, I like being warm! (laughs) I always make an effort to set the album release early in the year, but it always becomes late. It is eventually released in December this time round too. [Exclusive Interview] Yerin Baek "If the previous work was like a fairy-tale... the 2nd album is like an honest diary"
A small face that is revealed between long, blonde hair and a white mask. The shy girl who smiles like the crescent moon at dawn is Yerin Baek (23) indeed. Imagined as the ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ running in reverse breaking K-pop’s concrete rule with a hammer. A special girl who has decided on her type (style) ahead of time, just like Dido’s cosy vocal tone and Whitney Houston’s excellent singing. However, the first impression I had of Yerin Baek in my mind was ripped apart upon meeting her for the first time at the record label ‘Blue Vinyl’ in Mapo-gu on the 3rd. She had expressed her feelings ahead of the release of her new work as “embarrassing” and “scary”. Yerin Baek will be releasing her 2nd album ‘tellusboutyourself’ on the 10th. This full-length album comes after a year of her first album ‘Every letter I sent you’. She who was reluctant to be interviewed (previously) said that she would like to meet an interviewer this time round to talk about her new music. Yerin: “There was an upheaval (experienced) in my life while making the album. I met bad people and I have gone through moments where my personality has changed a little after experiencing a lot of things.” (Like) a glass bottle containing those moments still hidden away, we managed to listen to the 14 songs from the 2nd album on this day. From Chicago House in the 1980s, UK’s Garage Sound in the 1990-2000, to Indie Pop and Dream Pop in the 2010s…, a diverse sound spectrum and new experiment that is once again breaking and expanding Yerin Baek’s world. It seems to me that you have gotten more tattoos. Do they have any meaning to them? Yerin: Not necessarily. I have gotten some tattoos with my favourite artists in mind. For example, Amy Winehouse and The 1975. I actually participated in the customised design and colours for them together with the tattooist. Being 23 this year, do you feel like you are an adult now? Yerin: Not at all. (Laughs) Rather, I had the thought that ‘I am now an adult!’ when I was one or two years younger. Up till now, my life has been mainly revolving around being a trainee/practicing, and because of that, I thought that working at my company was everything that I knew. Upon stepping out into the wider world, it doesn’t seem like a big deal anymore. While meeting people from various professions, it dawned upon me that actually ‘I am still a kid’. The Baek Yerin in year 2019 seems to have undergone many changes. One of many is the founding of your independent label. What do you think? Yerin: I am happy that I am able to leave and work with the people I like and the people who like me, such as the sound and stage director etc. This is a system that I have never knew of before, and now I have opened up more choices for myself. Yerin’s Interview with Onstage Digging Club Seoul 2019
What are your thoughts on participating in 'Onstage Digging Club Seoul'? Yerin: I feel honoured to be able to start off the beginning of this project! I usually also like to cover songs from other artists, and with that, I feel really happy that I am able to remake/interpret an original song and sing it! I managed to gain new energy while working on the song, and it was a very interesting challenge for me. Do you do a lot of digging usually? (t/n: digging as in searching for new songs) Yerin: For me, intentionally looking for new music to listen to doesn't seem to be of my style. Even if I receive a song recommendation I am firm on my likings, so I think I have already settled down on a particular style that I enjoy listening to. On that note, perhpas due to my father's influence since young, I find myself listening to old pop, 70 80 pop songs, 90 00 pop songs very often. Although I have no memory of how I managed to find these songs as a kid, I remember singing along to Jo Deok-bae teacher's '꿈에', Loveholic senior's 'Loveholic', Lee So-eun senior's '오래오래', and so on! We met Baek Yerin who has debuted for 3 years and has released her album. She started writing as a hobby, and we asked her what she has been writing lately. She showed us her writings without hesitation. "I just wrote what I think about. We are always pushing our happiness away and are waiting for a bigger happiness to come. But it's a bit stupid isn't it?" This twenty year old girl may not have an outgoing image, but Baek Yerin knows herself well, and is a frank person. The story about her first solo album, FRANK, is also like that. With the melody and lyrics, she whispered her heart with her voice to us. How was the shooting? You seem so shy in front of the camera. Yerin: It is not easy for me to shoot. I was shy because many staff members were looking at me. Although it was embarrassing, it was also interesting as well. It's shocking that you have many tattoos. Yerin: It's not many. I have more that I want to do. (laugh) I'm thinking of having one on my feet. Which tattoo do you like the most? Yerin: The one I showed with a heart. I had it recently. Maybe you already saw it in my album's photo. 15& Baek Yerin "Adult now, it's a pity that I couldn't date while wearing my school uniform"
Because of the team name '15&', it surprised me when I heard that she is now 20. She debuted with Park Jimin in 2012. Adult ceremony is now coming close to Baek Yerin. She released a solo album as a new challenge last year. When I was listening to Baek Yerin's songs, the scene in "Begin Again" somehow popped up in my head. Not about gorgeous technique but about using her own voice to sing her 20, I asked her about her thoughts towards music. You are famous with your casual wear fashion through Instagram. As you have many 10s fans, people called you '10s Jeon Jihyun'. Yerin: Every time I do an interview, people always talk about this, it makes me feel shy other than my photos. At first I didn't have any intention, I just like to take photos of my look. But when the photos are compiled together, it became like this. To talk about your own fashion style? Yerin: I like to wear clothes that suit me. Although there are always new fashion trends to follow, I don't actually wear those clothes. Basic items, or some old things that I had for a long time, I also buy clothes in salvation shop if there are some clothes that I like. Besides, I'm working hard to make signature items of mine. Interview Part 1: Baek Yerin "Park Jinyoung PD's nagging? Worth the listen"
"Across the Universe" is just like a miracle. Following the release of 15&'s Baek Yerin solo album, the title track "Across the Universe" has caused an uproar on all major music charts, with the music industry expressing their shock. This is because no one actually predicted this outcome. Before the album got released, there was little promotions, and even after the release there were no huge promotional activities. Yet it happened that her ranking was continuously on the rise. This is definitely due to the power of her music and there is no other reason to explain. With Baek Yerin's title track "Across the Universe" from her first solo album 'FRANK' being officially released on 30th November 0AM, it has already reached #1 on music sites Bugs, Genie, Olleh, #2 on Mnet and #5 on Melon on the same day. All of her album tracks have entered the charts as well. The emotions of a 19 years old teen girl Baek Yerin. Every bit of that has been expressed within this album. Her smoothing, comfortable voice, together with the amazing ambiance here, has left a very deep impression in me. I guess it's this charm of hers that attracted the public, isn't it? Carrying much curiosity, I finally met Baek Yerin. Petite with a tinge of shyness in her, yet I could feel her inner self. Just like her music. Talking about Baek Yerin, there are many things that are worth the mention. At the age of 11, she started her trainee days after winning 2nd place in JYP open audition (Jang Wooyoung clinched 1st place). |
